Nian is Coming! is an asymmetric cooperative action game created for the Building Virtual Worlds class at Carnegie Mellon University's Entertainment Technology Center. Teams of 5 are given two weeks to build a playable game on the assigned platform.
Our game is designed like a boss fight, pitting the players against the legendary Chinese monster called the Nian. One player flies a large Chinese dragon kite that the other player is sitting on to help them avoid the Nian's attacks. The other play throws fireworks down on the Nian to deal damage to it. The goal of the game is defeat the Nian and save the Chinese New Year Festival.
My responsibilities for the project included designing the core interactions for each of the players (done through sketches and props), writing the dialog and introductory sequence, designing the climax sequence with the final firework (also done through sketches and props), and creating the music and sound effects for the game.
